The Cyrus Family Tree: The Apples Didn’t Fall Far

It’s really difficult to sum up Miley Cyrus’s career. She grew up in the public eye, and the entire world watched her transform from a wholesome Disney child star to a twerking, smoking, chart-topping pop idol. Her famous daddy Billy Ray Cyrus helped encourage his daughter to sing and helped her get her start in Hollywood. He is now back in the spotlight with his No. 1 hit remix Old Town Road, but when Miley was a teenager, he was known as Bobby Ray Stewart on the hit show Hannah Montana.

It’s clear that Miley has had a close relationship with Billy Ray; she was basically the ‘daddy’s little girl’ of Disney Channel. But she isn’t his only child. In fact, she is one of six kids. Her parents both have children from previous relationships and have three children together. Can you imagine growing up with one of the most famous teenagers on the planet?

These are all the members of the Cyrus clan and their family secrets.

Big, Happy Family

In 2005, Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus left Tennessee and headed to Los Angeles. From the moment she put that iconic blonde Hannah Montana wig on, Miley was a star. She was about 13 years old when she suddenly became the most famous teenager in America. As you can imagine, their lives have changed dramatically, and so did their family dynamic.

They are a pretty big family with eight members in total. Tish had her two eldest kids, Brandi and Trace before she tied the knot with Billy Ray. Then together, they welcomed Miley, Braison, and Noah into the world. However, Billy Ray’s oldest child has stayed out of the spotlight. Still, all the children seem to have inherited some sort of musical talent.

Billy Ray Cyrus (Dad)

In 1992, the same year Miley was born, Billy Ray Cyrus’s hit song Achy Breaky Heart made him a country music sensation. From 1986-1991 he was married to a woman named Cindy Smith, but the couple didn’t have any children. He had a brief fling with waitress Kristin Luckey, who gave birth to his child Christopher Cody in April 1992.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Tish Finley, welcomed Destiny Hope Cyrus that November. He nicknamed his happy baby girl Smiley, which later became Miley. He had several TV and music gigs over the years, but his second break came with Hannah Montana, where he played his real daughter’s TV dad. He starred as Robby Ray Stewart and used silly catchphrases like “dang flabbit.”

Tish Cyrus (Mom)

Before she met Billy Ray, Tish Cyrus was married to Baxter Neal Helson, who was the father of her two eldest children, Brandi and Trace. Tish claimed that she “tamed” her country star husband, and the pair tied the knot in 1993 when Tish was about to give birth to the couple’s second child, and her fourth, Braison.

Billy Ray decided to adopt Brandi and Trace, and they became the Cyrus’s. The couple has had a bumpy relationship and even filed for divorce twice. Both times they reconciled, and the couple seems stronger than ever now. Tish also helped launch and manage her daughter Miley’s career.

Brandi Cyrus (Half-Sister)

You may have heard about Miley’s older sister Brandy in recent years. The 31-year-old lives in Denver, so she’s not strutting the red carpets in Hollywood. However, she cohosts a pretty popular podcast called Your Favorite Thing with the Bachelor in Paradise bartender, former contestant, and fan favorite, Wells Adams.

She seems to be involved with the Bachelor franchise and went on tour with Kaitlyn Bristowe (former Bachelorette) for live shows of her podcast Off the Vine. She loves her large family too. She posted a throwback picture from her sister Miley’s wedding in March 2019 and captioned it, “Missing my two beautiful sisters today… I love you both so much!!!”

Trace Cyrus (Half-Brother)

If you were a teenager about a decade ago, like I was, chances are you had Trace’s voice stuck in your head. He was in the band Metro Station, and their hit song Shake It was blasting all over the radio. One of his former bandmates, Mason Musso, was also connected to the family because his little brother Mitchell was on the cast of Hannah Montana.

Trace continued to intertwine with Disney Channel when he started dating Brenda Song, who is known for portraying rich girl London Tipton in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and its sequel. But the couple split up. Now Trace is 31 years old, and he continues to release music. He was engaged to Taylor Lauren Sanders for a while, but they recently called it off.

Christopher Cody Cyrus (Half-Brother)

So the least known Cyrus is Miley’s half-brother. Christopher Cyrus is Billy Ray’s first child from his brief fling with Kristin Luckey. He was born in 1992, the same year as Miley. The Cyrus family never discuss their relationship with him publically, but Billy Ray explained how he felt when he found out his ex-flame was expecting a baby at the same time as Tish.

“Oh, my gosh, it was a mess, because the truth was I just really knew I loved Tish,” the singer told GQ. Christopher reportedly said that he feels excluded from the family and rarely heard from his dad. But Billy Ray still supports him financially. We don’t know much about Christopher, but he clearly inherited his father’s good looks.

Braison Cyrus (Brother)

Billy Ray and Tish’s second child together is 24-year-old Braison, a Nashville based folk singer and model. He also works as a “part-time cranberry farmer,” according to his Instagram account. He performed his debut single “I’ll Never Leave You” in December 2018 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In 2019, Miley’s little brother exchanged vows with Stella McBride.

Braison obviously has a musical dad, but he explained that Trace inspired him the most: “They didn’t have much of an influence, but my older brother, who I shared a room with as a kid, showed me a lot of cool stuff like Coheed and Cambria and Dashboard Confessional. My dad mostly listened to Steve Earl and Lynyrd Skynyrd.”

Noah Cyrus (Sister)

The youngest member of the Cyrus clan is currently coming into her own. She was strictly known as Miley’s little sister for a while, but it turns out, she is just as talented as the rest of her family. She continues to release new music and has an incredible voice. I have to say, she sounds exactly like Miley. She might not like the comparison, but it’s a huge compliment.

The star revealed that the comparisons could get frustrating: “It drives me f—ing nuts. It’s the reason I talk to a therapist three times a week, I swear.” Noah has really opened up with her fans about her struggles with depression and anxiety. She seems to be close with all her siblings and often refers to Miley as “Lil girl” on Instagram.

Dolly Parton (Godmother)

If you were a Hannah Montana fan, you know that Dolly has appeared on the show as Miley Stewart’s godmother. Well, this is another case of life imitating art. Or, technically, art imitating life. After Billy Ray’s country music success, he went on tour with Dolly Parton and appeared in a 1993 music video. The two developed a strong friendship, and she went on to become Miley’s “fairy godmother.”

When Billy Ray described his connection with the country starlet, he said, “You could just feel it.” Dolly also expressed her relationship with her goddaughter, stating, “Miley is dear to me. I just love her to pieces, and I’m glad she is mine.” Aww! I need a fairy godmother too!

Miley Cyrus

If there is one super famous celebrity who needs no introduction, it’s Miley Cyrus. The pop star was a little country girl who made her way to the Disney Channel in 2005. She had a clean, good girl image and was often described as a role model. Considering she was just a child herself, she didn’t like being labeled a “role model.”

It came with a lot of criticism, and every mistake she made was evaluated under a microscope. That’s why she decided to shed her Disney image in the most extreme way possible. After Hannah Montana concluded its final season, Miley cut off her hair, took off her clothes, and began twerking. Whether or not you agree with her behavior, it certainly got people talking and made her an even bigger star.

Liam Hemsworth (Ex-Husband)

Many people believe that Wrecking Ball, her most popular song to date, is written about her then-bumpy relationship with Australian hunk Liam Hemsworth. The pair met on the set of The Last Song when Miley was 16, and Liam was 19. Then they got engaged in 2012, before calling it quits in 2013. Miley had her moment – we all remember her twerking at the VMAs.

However, in 2016, when Miley got over her rebellious phase, fans were thrilled to see her sporting her old engagement ring again. They had a beautiful private wedding in December 2018. Unfortunately, the pair didn’t have a happy ending. After just eight months together, they broke up. By January 28th, 2020, the newly-weds were officially divorced.

A Bumpy Road

After 26 years together, Tish and Billy Ray have had their struggles, like every other couple out there. The difference is that the whole world got to see their ups and downs. At a certain point, each of them filed for divorce, Billy in 2010, and Tish in 2013, but they never followed through. They said that couples therapy helped them get through some of their rough patches.

Reportedly, Billy wants the value he didn’t see in his own parents’ marriage. They split up when he was only five, and it left permanent marks on his psyche. Family values are so important to him. They are a major reason he wanted to make things work with his wife.

Family Values

Billy proved his values through his actions when he adopted Trish’s two eldest kids, Brandi, and Trace. Trace took on the name Cyrus immediately, and Brandi chose to hyphenate, but he goes by Cyrus professionally. They were kind of like a modern-day Brady Bunch, but Billy Ray always treated them as his own.

It’s not easy to navigate fame as a family, and, of course, it comes with never-ending criticism. There were times when Billy Ray seriously doubted his choices. He expressed regret about Hannah Montana, mentioning, “the damn show destroyed my family.” However, he has since recanted the statement and explained he said things out of anger.

Parenting Choices

Everyone has opinions on Billy Ray’s parenting, but nobody is harder on him than he is. He publicly spoke about how he regrets not being able to be there for all the fun moments in his children’s lives in a friendly way, instead of carrying the burden of parenting roles. It’s okay, Billy Ray! Sometimes you need to be the parent, not the friend.

If you are a Miley Cyrus fan, you probably already know that Miley isn’t her given name. If you look at the starlet’s birth certificate, it says Destiny Hope Cyrus. I guess her parents knew she was destined for greatness since she was born. The nickname we all know and love stemmed from a family nickname Smiley Miley. It should be noted that the singer legally changed her name to Miley in 2008.

Got It from Her Mama

As the daughter of a country music singer, Miley had some interesting chores. I had to empty the dishwasher and take out the trash, but Miley got to pick up all the items that were thrown to her dad on stage during one of his performances. She must have found some bizarre items that crazy fans threw up there.

So, where did her trademark wild side come from? She got it from her mama. Tish was a groupie back in the late ‘80s, in various music scenes, and she even picked up the nickname “Tish the Dish” for her evident beauty. She kept her rebellious spirit by becoming a vocal cannabis advocate. It looks like Miley inherited a lot from her mom too.

Disney Image

Growing up in the public eye means everything you do is going to be criticized, and Miley has experienced plenty of it. She got extreme backlash when she did a controversial Vanity Fair photoshoot when she was 15 years old and still signed to Disney. People attacked the family calling the photos inappropriate for her age. Miley offered an apology shortly after that she has since revoked.

As the face of the Disney brand, Miley hated misrepresenting herself in order to uphold her cookie-cutter image. For example, during her Disney days, she was asked if she would ever get tattoos and answered no. She later explained that she always knew she wanted tattoos, but she had to maintain an innocent Disney persona.

The Dark Side of Me

At the end of the day, playing the role of Hannah Montana took a huge toll on Miley’s mental health. Sure, it looked like she had the ideal childhood from the outside, but deep down, she was dealing with a lot. She expressed how she would get constant panic attacks on set that caused her to vomit and pass out. Being a household name isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Unfortunately for Miley, removing the blonde wig didn’t separate her from the character that made her famous. After the show wrapped, Miley faced an identity crisis: “I was made to look like someone that I wasn’t, which probably caused some body dysmorphia because I had been made pretty every day for so long.”

Mental Health

She’s not the only Cyrus who suffered from anxiety. Trace Cyrus also experienced panic attacks as the lead guitarist of his band Metro Station. It got to the point where he canceled an appearance at the Toronto leg of the Warped Tour in 2015. He apologized to fans and said that his anxiety triggers were crossing the border.

Because of her siblings’ openness about their mental health issues, Noah felt comfortable sharing the battles she was facing. The rising star expressed her feelings of depression and anxiety through music. She has built an entire fan-base from being so candid with her audiences and staying true to herself no matter what else she is going through.

Noah’s Joyride

Thanks to her famous family, Noah Cyrus was seen around Hollywood growing up. She appeared in multiple episodes of Hannah Montana, and even did some work with Disney as a voice actress for Ponyo, alongside Frankie Jonas, the Jonas Brother’s little brother, otherwise known as the “bonus Jonas.”

Lots of under-aged kids take a spin around the block with their parents’ supervision, of course. It’s relatively normal. But when the whole world is watching your every move, it comes with criticism. At 13-years-old, Noah Cyrus took a joyride, and she made headlines when paparazzi snapped photos. Yikes! She was just trying to be a normal kid.

Social Media

Noah’s personal life was played out on Instagram. She was in a relationship with rapper Lil Xan, but when the pair called it quits, the messy split unfolded on social media. Noah sent him an X-rated meme of Charlie Puth, and he took the photo as validation that she was cheating. Both expressed their side of the story online.

The biggest Cyrus drama undoubtedly has to do with Miley. Her short-lived marriage to longtime love Liam Hemsworth made headlines. They were the target of extensive media speculation as soon as they announced their split. Miley addressed it immediately, and Liam waited a while before making an official statement and telling his side of the story.
