A Look into Rihanna’s Lesser-Known Life

Rihanna was born in Saint Michael, Barbados in 1988 and grew up there with her family. She started her career by moving to the U.S. back in 2005. Since she’s arrived, she has won over 150 Awards, achieved multiple Guinness World Records, and even started two charities. We all remember her popular songs like ‘Umbrella’ and ‘Run This Town.’ She has collaborated with many different recording artists such as Drake, Eminem, Kanye West, Ne-Yo, and Calvin Harris.

When she first got to the U.S., she signed with Def Jam Records, eventually working with the infamous Jay-Z. She isn’t only known for her music career. Rihanna is well known for being involved in humanitarian causes, entrepreneurial ventures, and the fashion industry. She actually founded two different charities and opened two companies of her own. Fun fact: she wouldn’t allow fans to bring umbrellas into her concert so that no one got hurt trying to copy her dance moves. These are just a few things about Rihanna that I found interesting. And wait until you hear what comes next…

Rihanna is Her Middle Name

Rihanna wasn’t always known as Rihanna. Her full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Until today, her family calls her Robyn, but as a singer, she wanted something more star-like. While her fans still call her Rihanna, her family and close friends call her Robyn. Rihanna mentioned that she is so used to hearing Rihanna that there’s a better chance she’ll respond to you if you call her Robyn.

Did you know that we have been mispronouncing her name this whole time? More recently, Rihanna came out saying her name is pronounced Ri-Anna and not Ri-Ah-Na as everyone says. Fan’s joke around that “we all collectively choose to pronounce Rihanna’s name wrong” and “I’ve heard her pronounce Rihanna this way, but I still like saying Ri-Ah-Na.”

Hard Life with Her Parents

Rihanna was born in 1988 in Barbados. Her mother, Monica, was an accountant, and her father, Ronald, was a warehouse supervisor. Her parents had a strained marriage, which stemmed from her father’s alcoholism and drug addiction. This really had an effect on her childhood, especially since he used to abuse her mother. Rihanna used to get in between them to try and break up the fights.

Her father owns a company called ‘Fenty Entertainment’ with a business partner, Moses Perkins. Rihanna has recently sued the pair for an invasion of privacy and “egregiously and fraudulently” misrepresenting that their company is connected to her. She previously used ‘Fenty’ to brand her business. Apparently, they would sell tickets for concerts which weren’t ever scheduled. Hopefully, this will be the last ‘daddy drama’ she must deal with.

She Wasn’t Allowed to Wear Make-Up

Growing up, Rihanna’s mother wouldn’t allow her to wear any makeup until she was sixteen. She says that she would watch her mother putting on makeup in the mirror and that she was obsessed with watching. Rihanna said, “My mum pretty much worked in the beauty and perfume industry for a long time – she did make-up for people and was a make-up artist – so I always loved that.”

Rihanna went from not wearing any makeup to working behind the cosmetics counter, to wearing it. The first time that her mom let her wear makeup was when she was sixteen, but it was more like a one-time thing. It was her school pageant, and her mom helped do her make up for her. The only time she could wear lipstick was when she was invited to be a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding.

Doctors Thought She Had a Tumor

Growing up, Rihanna would get crippling headaches. This was happening for years on end, to the point where doctors thought she actually had a large tumor because it was that intense. Fortunately, this pain wasn’t life-threatening. At this point, things with her parents were not going well. When her parents got divorced when she was fourteen years old, her headaches finally started to improve.

They finally realized what the cause was after all of this time. When she was going through it, she would hide it from her friends and family because she didn’t want anyone to think she was not normal. She said, “I always kept it in. I would go to school… you would never know there was something wrong with me.”

Rihanna Has Five Siblings, Most Whose Names Start With ‘R’

Rihanna has five siblings in total. She has two brothers who share the same parents as her, named Rorrey and Rajad Fenty (all names with an ‘R’). She has two half-sisters named Samantha and Kandy Fenty through her dad. She also has a half-brother named Jamie Fenty, who is also from her dads’ side.

Her brother Rorrey uses the name Gallest to perform. Rihanna bought him a beach house and helped him create his own fashion line. Rajad, her second brother, has around 180,000 followers and frequently visits her on sets and shows up at her concerts. Kandy is married with two daughters and works as a pharmacist. Samantha is a policy consultant and still spends time with her half-sister. Finally, Jamie is Rihanna’s older half-brother. He is a graphic artist and travels a lot.

She Sent Her Mother Gifts That She Would Deem as Too Much and Return

Rihanna told Oprah that she always tries to give her mother gifts, and her mother will try to return them, claiming they are just too expensive. So, she took things a bit further to try to get her mother to accept a gift. Rihanna, Oprah, and Rihanna’s family went over to look at a mansion in Barbados. When they were looking outside, Oprah let Monica know that Rihanna had a surprise for her.

Rihanna went and grabbed a small box with the keys to the house in it and gave it to her mom. At first, she didn’t really understand what was going on. Eventually, she got it and started freaking out. She gave her mother a beautiful house as a gift. She told her, “I wanted to do this for you for a very long time. You have been such an amazing mother, for example, soldier, and you get to walk away with the key to this house tonight.”

She Sold Candy in Middle School to Make Money

Rihanna grew up in a three-bedroom house and would help her father sell clothes in the street market. To make some extra money, she would buy candy and wrap it up in nice packaging so she can sell it to the students at school and make money.

It started in middle school, but now she is the queen of extra income. One of the main ways she makes money now is through her makeup line, Fenty Beauty. Her brand was the first to create a foundation that matches all skin colors. Apparently, they earned $100 million in sales within 40 days. Since then, Rihanna has also designed her own lingerie line for women of all shapes and colors called Savage X Fenty.

She Was a Tomboy

Rihanna said, growing up, that she was a tomboy even though she was inspired by her mother’s and aunt’s fashion. Even though she was a tomboy, she loved shoes. She admitted to falling in love with a pair of shoes that she saw while watching Sex in the City. She said, “I mean, the way they talked about those shoes. It made any woman want to get them.”

You can see that she is now anything but boyish. However, she still says that she feels like a tomboy. She said that she prefers hanging out with the guys when they go out and to go to strip clubs. She even goes to the strip club on her own sometimes, and she’d rather sit down with the guys as she says the conversation is usually better.

She Had a Musical Trio In 2013 With Her Classmates

In high school, Rihanna would turn to singing as a release from her home troubles. Her and two classmates formed a girl group and even scored an audition with Evan Rogers. Rodgers is a music producer who, at the time, was on holiday with his wife. The girls were only 15 years old at the time, in 2003, and excited for the opportunity.

Rogers says that the second that Rihanna walked in that room, the other two girls didn’t stand a chance. However, this is how Rihanna started to become famous. When Rihanna turned sixteen, she moved to Connecticut with Rogers and his wife to work on recording a demo album. Rihanna says that when she left, she didn’t look back, “I wanted to do what I had to do, even if it meant moving to America.”

She Won Her High School Talent Show

Rihanna won her high school talent show back in 2004. She said that Mariah Carey was a huge influence on her music and her career, and she sang her song “Hero” at that talent show. She also entered the Miss Combermere school beauty pageant and was honored with Best Gown and Most Photogenic awards.

Rihanna says that this was a huge step towards her music career, although the kids in high school stopped talking to her. She mentioned that even who she thought was her best friend stopped talking to her and that the Barbados pride got in the way. “In Barbados, we have this pride thing. People hate to give up compliments,” she continued, “It physically hurts them to say congratulations- they find it easier to be mean.”

Madonna Was Her Idol

Rihanna said that Madonna was her idol and biggest influence. She said she always wanted to be the “black Madonna.” She said that she loved the way she was able to reinvent herself throughout her career. Rihanna wasn’t the only one who considered Madonna her idol. Beyoncé said that she inspired her to take control of her own career. Even Britney Spears mentioned that Madonna influenced her.

Madonna was influenced by many people, including Marilyn Monroe, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, and Aretha Franklin. However, you can see that through everything, Madonna had her own unique style of performing. There were a lot of chances for someone’s style to take over her performing, but that never happened. Therefore, everyone looks up to her as an influence in music.

She Grew Up Singing Into Her Hairbrush

Growing up, Rihanna said she would watch videos of Bob Marley on television because that’s what they would play in the Caribbean. She said that she tried to copy everything that she heard and everything that Mariah Carey did.

Rihanna used to love A Whole New World by Whitney Houston and would sing it into her hairbrush around the house. She did that so much that her neighbors would call her Robyn Redbreast. One of the first Whitney Houston songs she fell in love with was I Will Always Love You. She said it inspired her passion for music. Another later inspiration for Rihanna was Aaliyah, who she said had a huge impact on her style mentioned that she loves her artistry.

Janet Jackson Was a Big Inspiration to Rihanna

Rihanna said that Janet Jackson was the first female artist she could relate to. Jackson was the most searched person on the internet by 2008. While the Superbowl debacle probably had a bit to do with her being searched for, she was the ninth biggest-selling pop artist and the second most successful female artist within contemporary pop.

Rihanna spoke highly of Jackson when she was interviewed by Times Online. She always just says whatever comes to her mind. She said, “She was so vibrant, she had so much energy. She still has power. I’ve seen her on stage, and she can stand there for 20 minutes and have the whole arena scream at her. You have to love Janet.”

She Was Inspired By Watching Beyoncé Perform

Rihanna was inspired by watching Beyoncé perform with Destiny’s Child. Back in 2005, Rihanna was chosen to perform a Destiny’s Child song for the 2005 World Music Awards. The girl group was being honored, and along with Rihanna, Teairra Mari and Amerie performed with her. It is said that Beyoncé was trying her hardest to not go up there and correct everyone’s dance moves.

Beyoncé, of course, has some influencers of her own. She said that Michael Jackson is her main musical influence. Her first concert was at age five, and Jackson performed there. She claims that at this moment, she realized her purpose. She also admires Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.

Rihanna has other musical influences and icons like Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Fefe Dobson, and Brandy.

She Was an Army Cadet

Back in Barbados, Rihanna knew singer Shontelle. The two were in a sub-military program together. Rihanna was an army cadet, and Shontelle was her drill sergeant. Shontelle said the sergeant would make Rihanna do push-ups and boss her around, especially when they would show up late on the parade square. This is where Rihanna chose to not continue her high school education and went on to pursue a musical career.

Shontelle helped write some of Rihanna’s music. She and Rihanna sat together after one of Rihanna’s shows, and they wrote ‘Man Down.’ Shontelle said that Rihanna works really hard, and she literally walked off of the stage and went to her trailer to work on new music together.

Random fun fact: Rihanna has an estimated net worth of $600 million.

She Was Discovered In Barbados

Rihanna was born in Barbados, and she was discovered there. I spoke about how she was discovered by Evan Rogers. To elaborate on the earlier story, Rihanna’s girl group managed to land an audition with Rogers. He said, “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist.” She went to his hotel room and performed Emotion by Destiny’s Child and Hero by Mariah Carey with her own twist.

Rogers said that he was so impressed that he scheduled another meeting with Rihanna’s mother there this time. He then invited her to Connecticut to record some demos so they can send them out to labels. They say it took about a year for anything to actually be recorded as she was only able to record during school holidays.

Jay Z Thought That Pon De Replay Was Too Big For Her

Rihanna’s demo was sent over to Def Jam Recordings. An executive at the label heard her demo and showed it to Jay-Z. He was new to the position of president and CEO of Def Jam at the time. When he heard ‘Pon de Replay’ he said he felt like the song was too big for her. Jay-Z said, “when a song is that big, it’s hard [for a new artist] to come back from. I don’t sign songs; I sign artists.” Even though he felt this way, Rihanna was invited for an audition.

She auditioned for Jay-Z and sang Whitney Houston’s cover of For the Love of You and her demo tracks for Pon de Replay and The Last Time. When he heard her sing Pon de Replay live, his opinion changed. In May, the song was released as her debut single, and she peaked in the top 5 in 15 countries. She even hit No. 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Charts.

She Acted in ‘Battleship’

The first time we saw Rihanna acting is in Bring It On: All or Nothing from August 2006. After this, she was in an animated film Home as the voice of Tip. Jim arsons and Jennifer Lopez were also in that animated film. After this, she was in the fifth season of Bates Motel and part of the all-female cast in Ocean’s 8.

Her first real film, though, was right after she appeared in Bring it On: All or Nothing, where she played Officer Cora Raikes in Battleship. This movie was loosely based on the game Battleship and received some mixed reviews. Even the New York Times said she was “just fine in the rather generic role.” She still won Choice Movie Breakout Artist at the Teen Choice Awards.

She Loves Tattoos

Rihanna loves tattoos. She mentioned once that she feels they are an entire culture of their own and speak for who a person is. She has a lot of tattoos herself. She got the first one in 2006. Some of the tattoos she has to include a music note on her ankle, a star on her left ear, a trail of stars going down the back of her neck, and one shaped like a gun under her right arm.

One of her more popular tattoos is the Egyptian goddess, which she had done under her chest. Her grandmother passed away in 2012 after a long battle with cancer, and she dedicated this tattoo to her. She said that the goddess kneeling with her wings spread is meant to “symbolize the eternal mother, friend to slave, sinners, and the helpless.”

She Is Not Fond Of Certain Foods

Rihanna claims she’s a very picky eater. There are rumors that she would be happy with just fruit and water, and that she doesn’t like eating veggies. She said that the hardest thing for her about being on the road is finding something that she can eat. Everywhere she goes, she asks if there is a McDonald’s nearby.

“I like anything that’s just formula. But Japanese food and Mexican or Indian – no. I’m a very picky eater. I grew up with one type of food in the West Indies, and I’ve had that for 17 years. It’s hard for me to try new things.” Rolling Stone magazine reported that she loves this one Italian restaurant in Santa Monica called Giorgio Baldi. They mentioned that she usually orders the spaghetti with tomato sauce and fried calamari.

She Needs a Shot to Perform

When it comes to performing, even the best of the best get nervous. Rihanna mentioned in an interview that she needs to do vodka or tequila shots before her performance to calm her nerves on stage. Her favorite alcohol is dark liquor, but she said that she would sometimes switch to vodka.

She does a few things before her show, like eat a lozenge, steam her voice, and do her make up. When she takes a shot, she’ll have her assistant mix it with OJ or soda water and lime so that she can sip it. She said that it really calms her nerves, which helps as she is always overthinking things and taking it very seriously.

Did you know that sometimes Rihanna will put on a hoodie and sneak into her audience to watch the opening act?

Rihanna Day Is a National Holiday

Rihanna Day was on Thursday, February 21st, 2008, in Barbados. While this holiday was only observed in 2008, it is still a big deal. Rihanna was turning 20 that year on Wednesday and wanted to fly out to Barbados and perform a free concert. She and Chris Brown were rumored to be dating at this time. Even though it wasn’t confirmed, there were rumors that she wanted to bring him with her to Barbados to accept the honor.

Brown helped Rihanna celebrate her birthday earlier in the week with Kanye West, Wilmer Valderrama, and others at Les Deux nightclub in LA. There are rumors of a spontaneous food fight, and Brown even performed an acapella version of ‘Happy Birthday.’ There were rumors after this that people saw them cuddling and getting cozy that night. Now, we know they were really dating, but back then, it was still a rumor.

She Is the Official Face Of Tourism For Barbados

In 2012, she signed a three-year deal to become the face of Barbados. They asked her to act as an official ambassador for her native country, hoping to boost tourism. They also gave her the honorary title of Ambassador for Culture and Youth. They shot the campaign on one of the island’s beaches in the morning. We often would see Rihanna vacationing on the Island. It is rumored that she also gave Oprah Winfrey a tour of her hometown for one of her TV specials.

“According to BTA chairman Adrian Elcock, production on the promotional campaign is expected to begin soon,” reported the Barbados Free Press back in 2012. “It will be launched in September, in time for the winter tourist season.”

She Once Witnessed an Exorcism

Rihanna says that as a child in Barbados, exorcisms were common occurrences in her church. “I used to go to church, and sometimes it would happen,” she explained. “In the middle of the ceremony, somebody would get up screaming and spinning out of control, and everybody would rush to [them] and pray.”

She even mentions that there was an exorcism that was actually performed in a house she was in. “They were praying around this table, we were young, though, and one of the girls, she got up, and she just started screaming. I remember they locked us in the bedroom because they didn’t want kids to see that. Every time they prayed, she would start screaming in the weirdest voice. It’s funny now, but at the time, I was like s—ing myself!”

She Was Close Friends With Katy Perry

Rihanna and Katy Perry were very close friends. Rihanna mentioned that Katy Perry is really fun and her sense of humor is what attracted her to a friendship. Rihanna was even her Maid of Honor at her wedding. Now, we are already at the point where the two don’t talk. There are a lot of awkward moments between the two that have been reported on in the tabloids.

Source: dailymail.co.uk

The two of them used to sit together at the VMAs and cheer each other on, or even just go out publicly together. We aren’t really sure what happened, but a moment that has everyone talking is when Katy Perry mentioned she her dream judge on American Idol is Rihanna. However, Rihanna responded by saying, “Oh, I don’t know. [It] Depends on how bored I am.”

She Organized Katy Perry’s Bachelorette Party

When Rihanna and Katy Perry were talking still, and Rihanna was her Maid of Honor, she organized the best bachelorette party ever. She treated everyone to a production of Ka by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand in LA. They were at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel Beach Club pool all night long partying after the show.

While she was able to attend and organize Perry’s bachelorette party, scheduling conflicts were making Rihanna re-record some of her music. Rihanna didn’t end up coming to Perry’s wedding. Perry got married to Russell Brand in October 2010 with a traditional Hindu ceremony in India. The couple divorced after 14 months of being married, so I guess Rihanna didn’t really miss much.

Rihanna Fangirled Over Jay Z

Rihanna was very starstruck when she met Jay-Z. She said that she just remembered being very quiet and shy. She said she was cold and even had butterflies. She said the first thing that went through her head was, “Oh God, he’s right there, I can’t look, I can’t look! I’m sitting across from Jay-Z. Like, Jay-Zee.” I’m sure this is how most people would react to meeting Jay-Z, but most of us would love to fangirl out over Rihanna.

Rihanna is known for mingling in crowds with an oversized hoodie and sunglasses on just to hang out with her fans. She didn’t have any security with her when she just hangs out with the crowd, so next time you’re at her concert, just take a look around. You never know who you will see in the crowd.

She Collaborated With Eminem

Rihanna started collaborating with Eminem with the song ‘Love the Way You Lie.’ This song reached No. 1 in over 20 countries. It was the seventh U.S. No. 1 hit of Rihanna’s career, which made her the female artist with the fifth-most No. 1’s in the chart’s history. ‘Love the Way You Lie,’ ‘Umbrella,’ ‘Disturbia,’ ‘Only Girl,’ ‘We Found Love,’ and ‘Diamonds’ are some of the best-selling singles of all time worldwide.

Rihanna also assisted with Eminem’s single ‘The Monster’ from his eighth studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2. The song entered the UK singles chart at No. 1. What do Rihanna, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles all have in common? They all have a No. 1 single every year for seven years in a row.

She Had the Most Sold-Out Shows For A Female Artist At ‘The 02 Area’ In London

The song Love the Way You Lie reached number two and became the biggest-selling song of 2010 in the UK. It was the first of Rihanna’s singles to sell over 1 million copies in the UK. She wanted to promote the album, so she headed out on her Loud Tour in June 2011.

Her concert sold out ten nights at ‘The 02 Arena’ in London. This gave her the title of the most sold-out shows for a female artist in the venue’s history. Rihanna was named the most influential artist in the UK back in 2013. She was also named most influential celebrity on the internet as the most popular person on Facebook, sixth-most followers on Twitter, and the most viewed and subscribed recording artist on YouTube.

She Took Vocal Lessons From Ne-Yo

While Rihanna was recording her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, she took vocal lessons from Ne-Yo. She is a mezzo-soprano with a range from B2 to C#6. “I’ve never had vocal training, so when I’m in the studio, he’ll tell me how to breathe and stuff… He’ll call out these big fancy words: ‘OK, I want you to do staccato.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, I don’t know what that is.'”

Her voice was complimented many times, but everyone compliments a different song. Her vocals on Loud received positive reviews from critics. James Skinner said Rihanna’s vocals on the song Love the Way You Lie is powerful and “it is Rihanna’s vocal- at once commanding, soulful and vulnerable- that anchors the song, and Loud itself.” Andy Gill wrote that California King Bed features her best vocal performance. Someone else mentions it is “Diamonds.”

She Was on Maxim’s Hot 100 List

Rihanna made the top ten of Maxim’s Hot 100 list and FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World several times. In 2018, she made Maxim’s Hot 100 list again. They mentioned she started the new lingerie line, Savage x Fenty and that she got a comedic role in Ocean’s 8. In 2013, Miley Cyrus got the number one spot on the list. In her interview, she went on about how Rihanna deserves to be up there as No. 1.

When Rihanna was told she is described as one of the sexiest women of her generation, she said: “it’s definitely flattering, but also uncomfortable.” She has also been on several magazine covers like Maxim, FHM, and Rolling Stone. Her Legs Are Insured For $1 Million

Rihanna was awarded Gillette’s Venus Breeze Celebrity Legs of a Goddess award back in 2007. Gillette then made the decision to protect them in case anything ever happened to them. The razor company insured Rihanna’s legs for $1 million just in case anything was to ever happen to them.

A lot of celebrities have insurance for random body parts. This is mostly because when a company chooses someone to be their ambassador, they usually choose the person based on their body part. America Ferrera’s teeth were insured by Aquafresh for $10 million, and Heidi Klum’s legs were insured by Braun after she became their brand ambassador in 2004. One of Klum’s legs is actually worth $200,000 less than the other one just because of a scar.

She Created the ‘Believe’ Foundation To Treat Terminally Ill Children

The ‘BELIEVE Foundation’ was founded by Rihanna to inspire and protect children in need all over the world. It helps bring medical attention, school supplies, toys, and clothes to deserving children who might not have been able to survive otherwise. Rihanna likes to visit children in the hospitals and claims that she has a soft spot for kids and just wants to make them happy. She invites them to her concerts or gives them gifts so that they have something at home for Christmas.

She also started the Clara Lionel Foundation, which is named after her grandparents. This charity is around to give children proper access to education all over the world. She wants to take impoverished countries and bring them the resources that they need.

One of Rihanna’s first wax figures was put up at Madame Tussauds in Washington, DC, of her dressed in a sleek black blazer with a faux hawk style cut. Since this one was put up, she has had figures created in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Berlin, Sydney, Vienna, London, and two wax figures in Manhattan.

Bush, the current U.S. president, Anna Wintour, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ray J, Amber Rose, Caitlyn Jenner, and Bill Cosby all depicted sleeping nude in a shared bed. Of course, he recycled these wax figures, and they were apparently put up in an exhibit as a sculpture.

She Canceled Her Performance at The Grammys Because Of Chris Brown

Just hours before the Grammy Awards in 2009, Chris Brown was arrested. There were rumors of an alleged assault, and at the time, it was just rumored to be Rihanna. Chris claims that they were at a party at the woman that he cheated on Rihanna with showed up. Apparently, this started a fight, which led to his eventual arrest. He claims that not only was she upset that the woman showed up at the party, but on the way home, she saw texts from her on his phone.

Chris Brown plead guilty to the felony assault he was accused of. He was sentenced to 5 years of probation and six months of community labor. He had to be 100 yards away from her, except for at music events they both attend, where it was said to be 10 meters.

One of her first albums, ‘A Girl like Me’ sold over 115,000 copies in the first week that it was out. The album went platinum after selling 1,000,000 copies. Rihanna really worked hard to get where she is, and it shows.

“Where Have You Been” and “We Found Love” Broke Records!

These two songs are from Rihanna’s sixth album called ‘Talk That Talk’ from 2011. The single ‘We Found Love’ not only topped the charts in 27 countries, but it peaked in the top 10 in 30 countries. This song became Rihanna’s longest-running No. 1 single in general, but also the longest-running No. 1 single of 2011 in the U.S.
